| Food Pairing Guide | This concentrated, velvety Malbec is a natural partner for red meat, especially anything grilled or chargrilled. It’s superb with steak, from sirloin and ribeye to flank or skirt steak with chimichurri. It also goes well with beef brisket tacos with salsa roja, barbecued short ribs or a classic burger. Its dark fruit and spice suit slow-cooked lamb shoulder, lamb chops with rosemary, and venison or wild boar stew. For a relaxed supper, try it with chilli con carne, empanadas or a spicy sausage pizza. Vegetarians could try grilled portobello mushrooms with garlic and herbs, a black bean and sweet potato chilli or a smoky aubergine bake. It’s also lovely with mature hard cheeses and a piece of good dark chocolate. |
Diemersdal Malbec takes a grape usually kept for blending and gives it a starring role. At Diemersdal, Malbec traditionally added depth to the estate’s Bordeaux-style blends, until the Louw family saw how expressive it could be on its own. Grown on the cool, unirrigated slopes of their Durbanville estate and matured gently in French oak, it has become a rare and characterful South African take on this much-loved variety.
In the glass it is a vibrant, deep purple, with a lifted, perfumed nose of violets, damsons and blueberries, a hint of char and spicy undertones from the oak. The full-bodied palate is complex and concentrated, layered with ripe black fruit, plum, cherry and bramble, and a savoury touch of herbs. Fresh acidity and super-fine tannins give it good structure around a mineral core, and it finishes long and velvety. It’s a must-try for Malbec lovers, and perfect with steak, barbecued meats and spicy, smoky dishes.
