| Food Pairing Guide | This supple, peppery Shiraz is made for hearty, flavourful food. It’s excellent with grilled and barbecued red meat, from a peppercorn-crusted steak or ribeye to spiced sausages, burgers and a South African braai. Lamb is a natural partner too, whether slow-roast shoulder with rosemary, lamb chops with garlic or a fragrant lamb tagine. Its black pepper and clove notes suit beef casserole, venison stew and smoky pulled pork. It’s equally good with rich pasta dishes such as lasagne, beef ragù or sausage and fennel pappardelle. Vegetarians could try a smoky bean chilli, aubergine parmigiana or a mushroom and lentil cottage pie. Finish with a mature Cheddar or smoked cheese, and serve the wine slightly below room temperature, at around 16 to 18°C. |
Diemersdal Shiraz is a characterful, single-vineyard red from the Louw family’s estate in Durbanville. The grapes grow on the cooler slopes to the north of the valley, rooted in rich red clay soils and farmed without irrigation. Fresh Atlantic air and steady summer breezes let the fruit ripen slowly, building concentrated flavour while keeping its freshness. Made entirely from Shiraz and matured in barrique, it shows the variety’s classic spicy character with real polish.
In the glass it is a deep, intense ruby. The nose has dark fruit and currants, with savoury hints of leather and tobacco. The palate is supple and clean, with black cherry and dark berries, a warming seam of black pepper, and hints of clove, mocha and vanilla from the oak. Smooth tannins and balanced freshness carry it to a satisfying, spicy finish. It’s a versatile, food-friendly red that’s especially good with grilled meats, lamb and rich, slow-cooked dishes.
