| Food Pairing Guide | This full-bodied Pinotage needs hearty, flavourful food. Diemersdal recommends ostrich fillet with a chocolate-chilli sauce, and venison or beef fillet with a similar rich, spiced sauce is just as good. It’s superb with rack of lamb, slow-roast lamb shoulder with garlic and rosemary, or a hearty beef stew or goulash. Its dark fruit and spice suit duck with plum sauce, braised oxtail and barbecued meats, especially anything with a smoky, spicy rub. Vegetarians could try a mushroom and chestnut bourguignon or a smoky bean chilli. Finish with a hard, mature cheese such as aged Gouda or Comté, or a few squares of dark chocolate. |
Diemersdal Pinotage Reserve is one of the estate’s stalwart red wines and a cherished part of the Louw family’s winemaking heritage. Pinotage, South Africa’s own home-grown grape, has long thrived in Durbanville, where the cool coastal climate gives this bold variety fresh complexity and balance. The wine goes through malolactic fermentation in French oak barrels and then matures for 14 months in French oak, some of it new, to build structure and depth. It is one of South Africa’s most decorated Pinotages, with recognition in the ABSA Pinotage Top 10 and a trophy for Best Pinotage at the Trophy Wine Show.
In the glass it is deep and inviting, with rich aromas of dark berries and plum, spicy hints of fennel and clove, and a delicate roasted note from the oak. The palate is full-bodied, powerful and well structured, with dark fruit flavours woven through complex, well-integrated French oak. Silky tannins carry it to a long, harmonious finish. It’s a serious, characterful red to open with rack of lamb, game or a hearty beef stew. It will also reward a few years in the cellar.
