| Food Pairing Guide | This fruity, spicy Pinotage is a natural partner for food with plenty of flavour. It’s superb with anything from the barbecue, such as sticky ribs, spiced sausages, burgers or a South African braai with boerewors. Lamb works beautifully, whether a rosemary-studded roast leg, slow-cooked lamb shoulder or Moroccan-spiced lamb tagine. Its plum and dark chocolate notes go well with duck breast with a cherry or plum sauce, and with game such as venison or ostrich. For heartier suppers, try it with beef stew, chilli con carne or a mushroom and red wine pie. It also pairs well with mature Cheddar or smoked Gouda, and with a bar of good dark chocolate to finish. |
Diemersdal Pinotage is a vibrant expression of South Africa’s own grape, grown on the Louw family’s estate in Durbanville. The vines grow on north-facing slopes in deep red soils and are farmed without irrigation. They are cooled by summer sea breezes, so the grapes ripen slowly and develop small, concentrated berries ideal for making wines with structure and elegance. After a short, warm fermentation in open vats, the wine matures in French oak barrels, which add a creamy richness that complements the fruit.
In the glass it is a deep, inviting red, with a well-balanced bouquet of dark berries, red fruit and Pinotage’s signature roasted banana. Hints of exotic spice and vanilla sit underneath. The palate is generous and fruity, with lingering flavours of cherries and juicy plums, warmed by dark chocolate and spice. Delicate tannins keep it smooth and approachable, and it finishes rich, spicy and creamy. Enjoy it now with lamb, barbecued meats or game, or keep it for a year or two in the cellar to develop further.
