Kaapzicht Skraalhans Pinotage is a fresh, restrained take on Pinotage, named after the gangly weed found growing taller than the bush vines themselves in the estate's Bottelary vineyards. Machine-harvested early to preserve freshness and keep alcohol levels in check, the grapes spend just three days on the skins with light pump-overs before gentle pressing, malolactic conversion in stainless steel, and 10 months maturing in old oak — a hands-off approach that lets the fruit, and the vineyard's sense of place, shine through. The result is a red wine dominated by classic cherry and mulberry notes, with a vibrant, plush palate and sweet, soft tannins carrying through to a bright, elegant finish. A modern departure from heavier, more extracted styles of Pinotage, it's equally at home with cured meats now or cellared for another few years.
Skraalhans is a gangly weed found in our vineyards, often growing taller than the Bush vines themselves. Our hands-off approach has allowed the vineyards to shine through, giving the wine a profound sense of place. This new, vibrant version of Pinotage is bright, fresh and elegant.
