Simonsig Pick of the Bunch Pinotage represents the finest expression of this uniquely South African varietal, crafted with decades of expertise at Simonsig. First bottled in the early 70s, Pinotage has flourished in the estate’s Stellenbosch terroir, producing wines of depth and character. This rich, fruit-driven Pinotage showcases juicy cherry and bramble berry flavors, beautifully balanced with subtle notes of liquorice and sweet spice. With its smooth texture and refined structure, it offers both immediate enjoyment and excellent aging potential.
Simonsig Wine Estate is synonymous with the history of the South African wine industry, the Stellenbosch wine region, and the Malan family name.
These elements are intertwined in this family-owned farm, where the late Frans Malan produced the first bottle of our much-loved Kaapse Vonkel, South Africaʼs first Méthode Cap Classique made in the classic bottle-fermented style. He is also honoured for co-founding the thriving Stellenbosch Wine Route, a first in its time. Today, his legacy lives on through his sons, Francois and Johan, and grandchildren Francois-Jacques, Christelle and Michael, the 2nd and 3rd Malan generations at Simonsig Wine Estate.
The grapes, harvested at an optimal ripeness of 23.5 - 24.5 Balling, underwent destemming and crushing, followed by 6 days on the skins (2 days of cold maceration and 4 days of fermentation). The fermentation process occurred over 4 days at 26-28°C, with 3-4 pump overs daily. After pressing, the majority of the wine returned to concrete and stainless steel tanks. The wine is predominantly unoaked, maintaining its pure expression. However, to enhance complexity, 14% of the blend undergoes maturation for 8 months in older fill French Oak barrels before being reintegrated during the blending process.
