Simonsig Gewürztraminer is an elegant Gewürztraminer with a light golden hue. Expressive aromas of white roses, fresh litchi and sweet tropical fruits. On the palate, layers of poached pear, litchi and candied grapefruit contribute to this complex special late harvest wine.
Jamala, translating to “Beauty”, is a fitting description for this Gewürztraminer, which is a celebration of the beauty, uniqueness and diversity of the South African spirit. As one of the few producers of this intriguing cultivar in the country, Simonsig are honoured to share this wine with you. The perfumed fruit of this exotically fragrant and luscious wine conjures up aromas of roses, lychees, Eastern spices and Turkish Delight, all enveloped in a veil of subtle sweetness.
Simonsig Estate was the first cellar to release a Gewürztraminer in South Africa.
First planted in the early 70s, Simonsig has built a highly successful track record. A notoriously difficult variety to grow and its small bunches and extremely low yield explains why there are only 122 hectares in South Africa. Gewürz means spice in German and Tramin is a town in the Trentino Alto Adige region of Northern Italy.
The Jamala Gewürztraminer is crafted in a distinctive late harvest style, wherein grapes are deliberately harvested late to enhance sugar accumulation. Grapes are carefully handpicked during the cool morning hours, destemmed, and cold-soaked overnight before pressing. The Gewürztraminer undergoes fermentation in stainless steel tanks at 14°C, and fermentation is halted when the desired amount of sugar is achieved (30 g/l). Subsequently, the wine is filtered and prepared for bottling.
