The 1947 Chenin Blanc comes from bush vines planted in 1947 by the Steytler family's great-grandfather, making it the second-oldest registered Chenin block in South Africa. The fruit is handpicked and gently whole-bunch pressed at a maximum of just 0.8 kPa for the most delicate extraction, then settled naturally overnight before spontaneous fermentation in 500L barrels and 600L ceramic amphorae, a process that can take two to four weeks. Ten months of maturation follows, split between 28% new French oak, second-fill barrels and amphora, before the wine is bottled unfiltered and unfined to preserve its purity and sense of place. The result is a wine of delicate citrus peel and orange blossom aromatics, deepening into untoasted almond, finely judged oak and a flinty reduction, carried by a saline, textured palate with real power and depth — a wine of remarkable elegance that wears its legacy with grace.
This 100% Chenin Blanc comes from Bottelary, Stellenbosch, from bush vines planted in 1947 — the second-oldest registered Chenin block in the country. The wine spends 10 months maturing across 500L barrels and 600L ceramic amphorae (28% new French oak, 50% second-fill, 22% amphora), and has an ageing potential of 10–15 years. It is vegan and vegetarian-friendly, bottled unfiltered and unfined.
