Kaapzicht Sonsteen Chenin Blanc comes from a single, granite-strewn vineyard in Bottelary planted in '85, named "Sonsteen" for the large granitic stones scattered through the soil and its prime position to catch the afternoon sun. Harvested in the early morning and rested for 24 hours in the cold room, the grapes are crushed, destemmed and given three days of skin contact — the technique behind this wine's distinctive lingering finish — before spontaneous fermentation and 10 months of ageing in old French oak. Pale gold in the glass, it shows captivating aromas of grapefruit, almond and orange peel, leading into a dry, lively palate accented with orange pith and white peach, with new nuances emerging with every sip.
This 100% Chenin Blanc comes from the single-vineyard "Sonsteen" block in Bottelary, Stellenbosch, planted in 1985 on unirrigated, weathered granite soil dotted with granitic stones — the source of its name and its afternoon-sun exposure. It spends 10 months ageing in old French oak. It is vegan and vegetarian-friendly.
