The Glen Carlou Collection Tannat showcases the depth and structure of this distinctive variety. Aromas of blackberry, black plum and dark cherry are layered with hints of spice, cocoa and subtle oak from barrel maturation. On the palate the wine is full-bodied and concentrated, with robust yet refined tannins providing structure and longevity. Fresh acidity balances the rich fruit profile, while gentle oak integration adds complexity without overpowering the varietal character. The finish is long and savoury, making this a bold, cellar-worthy red that pairs beautifully with hearty, flavourful dishes.
“This handcrafted Tannat has aromas of ripe plum and savoury black olive, followed by flavours of blueberry compote and vanilla. With its full-bodied character, vast amounts of tannins, and full-on complexity, this wine will benefit from cellaring even more.” Johnnie Calitz (Winemaker)
Made from 100% Tannat grown in vineyards in Paarl. It is fermented in stainless steel and matured in French oak barrels, with a portion of new oak to enhance structure and complexity, resulting in a full-bodied wine with concentrated dark fruit, robust tannins and good ageing potential.
In certain and special vintages, Glen Carlou produces a single varietal bottling of a pure and concentrated Tannat. Our vines grow in gravel soil with clay and granite subsoils. The clay preserves moisture, whilst the granite provides structure and depth to the wine. This vintage produced outstanding reds from the Simonsberg..
Under meticulous supervision from vineyard to cellar, the fruit's unique characteristics are highlighted in a strongly textured yet fragrant wine. Grapes are fermented in tiny batches with minimal intervention, allowing Tannat's natural structure, deep colour, and perfumed flavour to mature beautifully.
Glen Carlou is committed to sustainable viticulture and is accredited by South Africa’s Integrated Production of Wine (IPW) scheme, which promotes environmentally responsible farming practices.
