The Glen Carlou Collection Red Blend brings together selected red varieties to create a harmonious and expressive wine. Aromas of blackcurrant, dark plum and ripe cherry are layered with hints of spice, cedar and subtle oak influence from barrel maturation. The palate is full and rounded, with ripe fruit balanced by fresh acidity and polished tannins that provide structure without heaviness. Oak is carefully integrated to enhance complexity while allowing the fruit to remain the focus. The result is a versatile, approachable red blend with depth, elegance and broad appeal at the table.
“Full and complex. Vibrant red fruit and cassis from the Cabernet Sauvignon combined with hints of Cabernet Franc’s tobacco leaf and bell pepper and a drop of Merlot’s plum and vanilla undertones. Explosive and evolving aromas of ripe black berries, leather and pencil shavings are followed by hints of cedar wood and cassis. The palate is brimming with dark fruit and peppermint chocolate, alongside of soft tannins and a velvety finish. A wine of great pedigree that will reward cellaring.” (Johnnie Calitz— Winemaker)
Carefully crafted blend of classic red varieties grown in Paarl. Each component is fermented separately in stainless steel and matured in French oak barrels before blending, producing a full-bodied wine with layered dark fruit, balanced acidity and well-integrated tannins.
Our viticulturist and winemaker are passionately involved in maintaining the unique terroir of our vineyards nestled on the slopes of the Simonsberg Mountain. Vines in all three vineyards are drip irrigated and trained on a 5 wire Perold trellis system. Planted in selected sites suited for each variety, the soils consist of weathered granite and “koffieklip”.
Gentle handling and absolute attention throughout the wine making process ensured the wine was kept as natural as possible. Distinct blackcurrant and liquorice, with characteristic bell pepper notes mingle with chocolate and sweet berry flavours. The components were fermented naturally in small open top barrels and left on skins for 30 days. Only the free-draining juice went into French Oak barriques, matured for 18 months. Our philosophy for Collection is one of minimal intervention during the winemaking process, as the wines are encouraged to develop at their own pace.
Glen Carlou is committed to sustainable viticulture and is accredited by South Africa’s Integrated Production of Wine (IPW) scheme, which promotes environmentally responsible farming practices.
