| Food Pairing Guide | This powerful, structured Bordeaux-style blend shines with rich, savoury food. It’s superb with a roast rib of beef, chargrilled ribeye or fillet steak with a red wine jus or béarnaise. Lamb is a classic partner, from a herb-crusted rack to slow-roast shoulder with garlic and rosemary. Its cassis and spice work beautifully with venison loin and a blackcurrant sauce, roast duck or a rich game pie. For slow-cooked dishes, try beef bourguignon, braised short ribs or oxtail stew. Vegetarians could try a wild mushroom Wellington or a porcini and lentil cottage pie. Finish with aged hard cheeses such as mature Cheddar, Comté or Parmigiano Reggiano. Decanting for an hour or two before serving will help it show at its best. |
Vergelegen Estate Red is the flagship red of one of South Africa’s most historic and acclaimed estates. Its name means “situated far away”, a reminder of the estate’s remote beginnings in the shadow of the Helderberg near Somerset West. It is a pioneering Bordeaux-style blend that captures Vergelegen’s unique microclimate and terroir. Grapes are selected from across the estate’s diverse vineyards, particularly the warmer north- and north-west-facing slopes, which give ripe tannins and concentrated fruit. Each variety brings something to the blend, from structure and depth to aromatic lift.
In the glass it is deep and dark, with aromas of cassis and red berries, warm spice and fine notes of cedar. The palate is powerful yet refined, with concentrated dark fruit, supple, ripe tannins and balanced freshness. It finishes long and dry, with lingering cassis, spice and a slightly savoury close. It’s a red to savour with roast beef, lamb or game, and it has the structure to age gracefully for many years.
Vergelegen (meaning “situated far away”) has over 300 years of history, but their philosophy is simple: "There must be harmony between the old and the new."
