Quinta do Vesuvio Pombal do Vesuvio Douro is a rich, smooth, yet fresh red, full of dark fruit flavours, chocolate, and a hint of leather—classic Douro character in a glass. The name “Pombal” means “dovecote” in Portuguese, referring to the traditional dovecotes found near the estate. The wine is made primarily from Touriga Nacional, Portugal’s flagship grape, blended with other local varieties like Touriga Franca and Tinta Amarela.

Quinta do Vesuvio dates back to 1827 and has long been considered one of the finest vineyards in Portugal. It was originally owned by the legendary Antónia Adelaide Ferreira, a visionary woman who revolutionized winemaking in the Douro. Back in the 19th century, when most estates struggled with disease and economic hardship, she expanded and modernized Vesuvio, helping to set the standard for quality winemaking in the region.

Today, the estate is owned by the Symington family—one of the great names in Port and Douro winemaking, with over 130 years of experience. They continue to produce top-quality Ports and dry red wines from this extraordinary property.



Vesuvio’s vineyards are some of the most extreme in the Douro, with vines planted on steep terraces along the river. The terrain is rugged, making hand-harvesting essential, and the poor, rocky soil forces the vines to work hard, producing low yields but incredibly concentrated grapes. The estate benefits from warm days and cool nights, which help balance the richness of the fruit with fresh acidity, giving the wines elegance and structure. While Vesuvio is known for its traditional lagar foot-treading method for Port production, their dry red wines—like Pombal do Vesuvio—are made using a more modern approach, showcasing pure fruit flavors and a refined, balanced structure.
