Masca Del Tacco Susumaniello is a rich and opulent red, great for lovers of Primitivo or oaked Riojas. It's full bodied, with a deep red colour and ripe blueberry and cherry aromas, as well as warming spice and earthiness. As well as being powerful and hearty, it's also got a real elegance to it, with smooth ripe tannins, a touch of vanilla and toasty oak, and bright fresh fruit flavours which keep going in your mouth.
Susumaniello is a rare and ancient grape variety that was almost forgotten—at one point, fewer than 15 hectares existed in the world! But now, thanks to producers like Masca del Tacco, it’s making a well-deserved comeback.
“Susumaniello” comes from the Italian word for “donkey” because the young vines are so productive that they carry a heavy load of grapes—just like a hardworking donkey! But as the vines age, they produce fewer grapes, but with more concentrated flavors, which is why this wine is so intense and delicious.
Puglia is a hot region, but these vineyards benefit from coastal breezes that keep the grapes from overripening, giving the wine its perfect balance of power and freshness. The touch of oak aging adds extra complexity, rounding out the tannins and giving that hint of vanilla and spice.
