| Food Pairing Guide | This elegant, gently oaked Chardonnay is a versatile partner for richer seafood and white meat. It’s lovely with roast chicken with lemon and tarragon, roast turkey, or pork tenderloin with a creamy mustard sauce. Seafood is a natural match, especially crab, lobster, scallops, or a rich fish such as salmon or halibut with beurre blanc. Its creamy texture and fresh acidity suit dishes in cream sauces, such as chicken fricassée, fish pie or mushroom tagliatelle. For autumn and winter, try it with roast squash and root vegetables, butternut risotto or wild mushroom dishes. It also goes well with roast duck or goose. Finish with Gruyère, Comté, mature Cheddar, Manchego or Parmesan. Serve lightly chilled, rather than ice-cold, to let its layers show. |
Muratie Isabella Chardonnay Family Reserve is a wine with a personal story. Muratie is one of South Africa’s oldest and most atmospheric wine estates, tucked beneath the rugged slopes of the Simonsberg in Stellenbosch and lovingly cared for by the Melck family. Its wines are named after people from the farm’s long history. For owners Rijk and Kim Melck, there could only be one name for their Chardonnay: Isabella, after their baby daughter. The grapes are hand-picked and whole-bunch pressed, only the free-run juice is used, and the wine is fermented naturally before maturing gently in large French oak barrels.
In the glass it is a bright, pale gold. The nose is elegant, with fresh apple, citrus and hints of delicate tropical fruit, layered with subtle wood spice and a touch of vanilla. The palate is round and creamy, balanced by a lively, almost Chablis-like freshness that keeps it poised and refined. It finishes clean and lingering. It’s a beautifully crafted Chardonnay for seafood, roast chicken or creamy dishes, and it will gain extra depth with a few years in the bottle.
