Daniel Fries Devonschiefer Pinot Noir is a rare, limited-edition bottling from one of the Mosel's rising stars, a unique blend created by Daniel himself and made in tiny quantities. Grown on the steep Devonian slate slopes surrounding Winningen, the fruit is hand-harvested and fermented spontaneously with indigenous yeasts in open oak vats, then aged in barriques before a light blending in stainless steel. Brilliantly bright and clear in the glass, it reflects its high-altitude, cool-climate origins, showing a fresh, charming core of pure red fruit with no overt oak influence. Despite its lightness, an extended spell in barrel gives it a surprising amount of texture and mid-palate weight. Bottled unfined and unfiltered, it's an honest, expressive Pinot Noir that rewards a table of duck, game or lamb.
This 100% Pinot Noir comes from the steep Devonian slate (Devonschiefer) slopes around the village of Winningen in Germany's Mosel. The grapes are hand-harvested and gravity-fed into open oak vats for spontaneous fermentation with indigenous yeasts. The wine is aged in barriques, then blended in stainless steel before being bottled unfined and unfiltered to preserve its natural texture.
