| Food Pairing Guide | This light, bright Cinsault is a wonderfully versatile red that loves food. Serve it lightly chilled with charcuterie, pâté or a picnic spread, or with roast chicken, duck breast or pork with herbs. Its crunchy red fruit and savoury edge suit Mediterranean flavours, such as bouillabaisse with rouille, tomato-based fish stews, grilled tuna or salmon. It also works well with Middle Eastern and Asian dishes, from lamb koftas to Japanese yakitori or seared duck with soy and ginger. Pizza, mushroom risotto or a beetroot and goat’s cheese tart are excellent vegetarian matches. It’s also lovely with soft cheeses and young Comté. Try serving it slightly cool, around 14 to 16°C, to bring out its freshness. |
Lukas Van Loggerenberg Geronimo is the wine that started it all for one of South Africa’s most exciting young winemakers. When Lukas left a steady job to set up a family winery with his wife Roxanne, he named his first Cinsault “Geronimo” for the leap of faith it took. It has since become one of the most admired examples of the variety in the country. The grapes come from an old vineyard in Firgrove, close to the ocean, where low-yielding granite soils give small, thick-skinned berries. Lukas uses a hands-off approach in the cellar, with natural fermentation, older oak and an early bottling to capture the grape’s vibrant, crunchy fruit.
In the glass it is a bright, translucent ruby. The nose is sappy and aromatic, with black raspberry and strawberry alongside savoury hints of black tea, dried herbs and a subtle seaweed-like salinity. The palate is light-footed yet concentrated, with silky tannins, fresh acidity and a lingering, gently savoury finish. It’s a red of elegance and energy that’s delicious slightly chilled with a wide range of food, from charcuterie to seafood stews.
