Château Maucoil Châteauneuf-du-Pape is made from organically-grown grapes, this very deeply-coloured red offers aromas of blackberries, dried fruit and dark roast coffee on the nose. Typically lifted and fresh despite its full body and intense colour, the palate has plush berry fruit, subtle savoury spice, and pleasantly grippy yet ripe tannins with a very long finish.
The bottle is embossed with the papal coat of arms, that’s because this region was once the summer residence of the Popes in the 14th century. This region is known for its famous "galets roulés"—those large, round stones in the vineyards. These stones soak up the sun during the day and release the warmth back to the vines at night, helping the grapes ripen fully and develop all that rich, concentrated fruit. But don’t be fooled—this wine isn’t just power; it has elegance and balance too.
Maucoil is one of the only estates in the region that still owns vineyards planted by Napoleonic soldiers—that’s some serious history in a bottle! And their vines are organically grown, meaning the winemaking here is as natural and hands-off as possible, letting the vineyard do the talking.
Would this pair well with a hearty meal after a long walk? Absolutely. Would it also be great with good company and a sunset? Even better!
