Meerlust Cabernet Sauvignon is an impressive Cab Sav from Stellenbosch with complexity and balance. It has an intense, vivid purple colour and classic aromas of cassis, plum and dark fruits, as well as cigar box - one of the markers of great Cabernet. On the palate the wine is full bodied and impressively structured with juicy flavours of intense blackcurrant and plum. Whilst full-bodied, it has a lovely freshness to it, and the tannins lend a rich, bold structure. A great example of this grape variety from one of our favourite winemakers!
Meerlust Estate has been the pride of the Myburgh family since 1756. Today, the dedication to quality winemaking continues under the guidance of 8th generation, Hannes Myburgh and Cellar Master, Chris Williams. The name Meerlust means “pleasure of the sea”, as the property is situated 5km from False Bay (and 15km south of Stellenbosch), with the cooling influence of the coast, allowing the grapes to ripen slowly.
Vegetarian, but not vegan
The grapes come from low-yielding, mature vines grown in decomposed granite mixed with clay. The vines are densely planted on gravelly, low vigour Vilafontes and Dundee soil which has approximately 15% clay to ensure water availability to the vines roots right through the growing season.
Partial de-stemming takes place before pressing. Fermentation occurs in small stainless steel vats with regular pumping over for gentle extraction. Partial un-innoculated fermentation takes place. Following malolatic fermentation, the wine was matured for 18 months in tight grained French Nevers oak barrels, 80% new, 20% second passage.
The grapes were hand picked and selected in the coolness of the morning.
