Raka Figurehead is a wonderful Pinotage-based blend with a bright, clear ruby colour and rich complex flavours. The wine reveals raspberries and blackcurrant on the nose with a hint of spicy eucalyptus and caramelized banana from the Pinotage. Herbaceous black olives leads to a complex palate with ripe tannins and warm spice. A great blend and perfect for enjoying in front of warm fires or while watching your mates do the braai (BBQ).
Raka is the lifelong dream of Piet Dreyer, formally a fisherman who named his fishing boat 'Raka' after the half man, half beast creature that was as black as the night in the Afrikaans poem by N.P. van Wyk Louw. He wanted a black vessel so that he would not have to repaint it so often from the stains of squid ink and we love these very black bottles of fantastic SA red wines.
