Spioenkop Pinotage goes to show that this is a grape variety that is not to be sneered at, and is capable of producing excellent wines of real character. Rich, ripe, and earthy. On the nose you are stuck by a luscious blend of ripe black fruits, cassis and cinnamon spice. It has a backbone of crunchy acidity, but rich tannins and juicy black cherries, as well as layers of warming spice, coffee and chocolate notes. It's well structured with great length. This wine is unfiltered and unfined, spending around a year in French oak barrels. Try if you're a fan of Pinot Noir and are looking for something a bit left of field.

The Elgin Valley is one of South Africa’s buzz wine-growing regions. Traditionally a hot spot for apple farmers, it’s fast becoming the destination for premium Cape wines, thanks in no small part to its unique terroir where altitude and Atlantic influence offer vines a cooler, longer growing season.

Elgin's first Pinotage from the mad hands of Koen and Hannelore Roose, a crazy Belgian couple following their dream of living closer to nature and making great wines which express their terroir. All vines are hand-harvested as the steep rocky slopes are treacherous for tractor, and the farm boasts seven different soil structures and each varietal is planted on the appropriate type to make the vines work hard and dig deep. Koen and Lore are hell-bent on creating elegant wines that are sexy and pure but at the same time unique and even a little wild. These are amazing wines totally driven by expression and quality.

Koen was mad enough, and has been proved brilliant enough, to have uniquely planted Elgin valley with Pinotage. His bio-dynamically farmed vineyard produces impeccably fine coastal fruit, hand-picked and naturally fermented, aged in second and third use demi muids. A gloriously precise, fresh and vibrant expression of this difficult grape and like no other in the Cape… which is why we choose to work with it. Hand-picked grapes in small 18 kg boxes, one night in the cool store (8°C) and than destemmed. Five days cold soak in our red fermentor, followed by spontaneous wild yeast fermentation. After fermentation, the grape-skins were slowly pressed in a stainless steel basket press (JLB 5). Natural malolactic fermentation in selected barrels. Maturation prior to release inclded 10 months on its natural fine lees - 40% new barrels. Barrel ageing without one racking, for 10 months; no fining and no filtering. Grapes are destemmed then have 6 days cold soak followed by spontaneous and very quick yeast fermentation. Slow pressing and malolactic in selected French oak barrels and ageing for 11 months on fine lees. No fining, no filtering.
