Terroir Malmesbury shale

Paarl Heights Shiraz is a great value bottle of South African Shiraz, with rich and dark, smokey aromas on the nose. There's plenty of ripe, juicy fruit and black pepper notes on the palate.

JD Rossouw, Ryno Booysen and Pierre Louw drive the energy and enthuasiam for expressing the loveliest wines from their country, along with Samantha Bailey's expertise in finesse. The key is knowing the characteristics of each plot, understanding the benefits each cultivar can bring, breaking rules and pushing boundaries. They use a combination of knowledge, a love of nature and science to create versatile, expressive and food-friendly wines from a country that has been making wine for 360 years.

Malmesbury shale is a dense soil type with clay that has a good water retention ability so its very suitable for later ripening varieties. The soils drains very easily, as excess water has unlimited drainage opportunities between the 'bedding planes' or layers of shale. The vines are never in the situation where they can sit back and enjoy life as they are forced to push their roots down in search of water. The wine is produced from only free run juice and fermented on the skins in stainless steel tanks. The wine is left on the lees for an extended period for greater palate weight and mouthfeel.
