Montigoli Amarone della Valpolicella is a delightful example of this wine from a well-established producer within the heart of the Valpolicella region. Deep reddish-black in colour with a nose of concentrated black fruit compote and hints of vanilla and tobacco. The palate is full-bodied with ripe, supple tannins, more black fruit, sour cherry, liquorice and spice. The finish is long and complex with a gently bitter twist.

Established in 1933, Cantina Valpolicella Negrar has 230 grower members tending over 700 hectares of vineyard, mainly in the Valpolicella Classico region.They work closely with local wine bodies, including with the University of Verona's Faculty of Viticulture and Oenology, to continuously develop and improve quality. Winemaker Daniele Accordini and viticulturalist Claudio Oliboni are involved in a number of research projects to understand the unique characters of region's indigenous varieties and classic wine styles: Valpolicella and Amarone.

The cantina is certified organic by the Istituto Certificazione Etica e Ambientale and is a part of the Valpolicella RRR (Reduce Retrench Respect) that certifies ethical vineyards after five years of sustainable vine growing and wine production. This is the first startup certification of an appellation area in Italy, achieved with the support of local towns and partners in the project, and includes 73% of the vineyard area in Valpolicella. Since 2015, Cantina Negrar and Domini Veneti have recycled 30 tons of siliconised paper waste from labels through the RafCycle programme.Cantina Negrar collaborates in the Scuola Nel Vigneto, a social educational project aimed at second-grade students. It aims to promote interest in and knowledge of Valpolicella’s winemaking traditions, along with its historical and environmental aspects, amongst younger generations whilst helping to develop their creativity and teamworking skills. Since 2012, over 700 young people have participated and each year the project ends with an art competition to represent the particular features and details of the Valpolicella landscape. The winning artwork is transformed into a label of the year which adorns the bottles of a special collection of wines.

The grapes are sourced from the Valpolicella Classico sub-zone. For the traditional Amarone appassimento process, the grape bunches are picked and then dried for around 3-4 months. They are then destemmed and gently pressed. Fermentation takes place in January for around 4 weeks, and malolactic fermentation follows in wood. The wine is aged for 24 months in large oak barrels, with a further 6 months in bottle.
